Filipino independent film Halaw (Ways of the Sea) won the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Special Mention Award at the Berlin Film Festival last week.

"The award is a first for a Filipino film. It's (Halaw) also nominated for the Cinema Fairbindet Award and the Amnesty International Award," Halaw editor Chuck Gutierrez said in a letter sent to SPOT.ph.

Halaw follows the journey of an illiterate Badjao who illegally crosses the border of the Philippines and Malaysia to find his wife, who is lost in Sabah. It won Best Film, Best Director (Sheron Dayoc), Best Actor (John Arcilla) and Best Editing under the New Breed Full-Length category in the 2010 Cinemalaya Awards.
